How to play Sportegories

Rules and tips

It’s daily sports Scattergories. You get one letter, 8 categories and two minutes. Type a player’s full name for each category before time runs out.

  • One letter for all 8 categories. Everybody gets the same letter today.
  • Full names only. Think people, not abbreviations.
  • Two minutes for 8 categories. That’s 15 seconds each.

Two minutes, once a day

A new letter and new categories drop at midnight your time. Finish a day and your streak keeps going. This is one of the four games free every day, no account needed. The other three are the Daily Crossword, Alma Mater and Career Path. Make an account and it saves your scores, your streak and your achievements. The Card opens all twelve with no limit, plus the Archive of every past day. Five of the games also have NBA, NFL and MLB editions.

Beating the clock

  • Every row carries its own difficulty: Anchor, Mid, Hard, Spice. Sweep the Anchors first. All eight stay open for the full two minutes, so you lose nothing by jumping.
  • Stuck on a row? Run through first names. Most people only think of last names and forget first names count too.
  • A player can only be used once. When a name fits two rows, spend it on the one you’re less likely to fill again.
